He should have been confident and secure in his career, but his internal critic continued to edge him into a deeper sense of doubt and self-questioning. Shifting from struggling singer-songwriter, glam superstar, (plastic) soul man to krautrock crooner and arch-experimentalist, by 1980 Bowie had already lived several lifetimes of creative reinvention.
